DSi: How is it Justified?
If you're already the proud owner of a DS or DS Lite, It may be difficult convincing your parent or significant other that upgrading to a Nintendo DSi is worth the cost. It's easy to view the DSi as simply a fancier version of its predecessor, and those around you may not be convinced by the dual cam implementations. They won’t care for the sleeker design or the faster processing power of 16 MB RAM, which is four times more powerful than previous incarnations of the portable system. And they probably won't care for the DSi exclusive games slated for release.
So, how do you convince your parent/partner that the Nintendo DSi cost is worth it?
1. Iterate the fact that the DSi is a new gaming system, not simply an upgrade as the DS Lite was. There are enough new features and augmentation to the system to cement the fact that the DSi can be viewed as a completely new system, and therefore the fact that you can trade in your old DS for a reduced price on the DSi is definitely a good thing.
2. Nintendo, and especially the DS, have paved the way to make gaming accessible to anyone, not just the typical demographic. Therefore, this may just be the perfect time to get your parents or partner into gaming. The DSi will bring this fact even further, with many more exclusive games on the way.
3. If they're adamant that they will not be into the gaming side of the DSi, well there's still a whole host of features to explore. The DSi can be used as an internet video phone, and boasts audio features can rival the MP3 players that are available in the market today. Add the fact that the DSi can act as a digital camera and comes complete with many multimedia capabilities, expanded with the addition of an external storage device.
4. If they're into personal fitness, then tempt them with titles like Personal Trainer: Walking, which comes with its own motion-sensing apparatus to monitor walking workouts and the amount of calories burned. Upcoming DSi titles cover a whole range of attractive topics, including Yoga and Pilates, Brain Training and even cooking recipes. When viewed as a complete multimedia package, the cost of the DSi becomes a lot more reasonable and favourable to all concerned!
DSi: Worth the Buy?
The latest release from Nintendo, the Nintendo DSi is actually not a truly new handheld console, but rather an upgrade of the previous DS. In light of this, many gamers have questioned the merit of splashing out on a new handheld if all it really has to offer are a few more tricks up its sleeve. Is the DSi worth the purchase? We're here to find out.
With over 2 million units sold alread yin Japan alone, Nintendo are confident that the western release of the handheld will mirror the success of the east, despite the criticisms already voiced, which are not unfounded. The Nintendo DSi is, in essence, the same machine as the DS and the DS Lite, albeit with the following improvements:
- A sleeker, more portable design;
- A smoother and more resistant exterior, making transport even safer;
- Dual cameras integrated in the system (a feature that we're promised will become more prominant with future releases;
- An SD slot added as an external memory option;
- Improved audio functions, making the DSi comparable to the best MP3 players in the market today;
- Improved brightness to match the visual quality of the PSP;
- Faster processing power at 16 MB RAM , a massive improvement compared to the 4 MB RAM of previous models;
- The DSi shop, with Nintendo following suite of other develoers by allowing online games and functions to be bought and downloaded.
- Improved WiFI connectivity.
The original DS was released way back in 2004, and Nintendo argue that the handheld (and the later released and improved Nintendo DS Lite) we're being left behind in these modern times. The DSi is being voiced as a neccessary step toward the future, striving for excellence rather than content to drift along with technology that is now years old.
As for whether the purchase is really worth it, the gamer must make that decision themselves. There are definitely a lot of pros to the new DSi, and the functions of the system reflect the technological context of our day. hat said, anyone who already owns a DS and is happy with the way it functions probably won't see any need to upgrade to the DSi, as a lot of the improvements are peripheral at best. Nintendo do however plan to tailor any new releases to the possibilities of the DSi. The DS will still be able to play some of these games, but eventually the DSi is set to speed ahead of its parent system. And, as Nintendo say, you don't want to get left behind...
